PHOTOBIOMODULATION THERAPY (PBMT)/LASER THERAPY

Benefits of Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT)

  • Improved Healing/Faster Recovery

  • Decreased Pain, Swelling, and Spasms

  • Improved Blood Flow

  • Calming

  • Releases Endorphins

  • Blue Light - Antibacterial/Anti-fungal Properties

PBMT is a wonderful modality independently but is also very beneficial when applied in conjunction with other therapies.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PBMT

Photobiomodulation (PBMT), also known as Cold Laser, and Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), is a non invasive way to address pain and soreness in the equine athlete.

The word ‘LASER’ is actually an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emissions of Radiation.

Not only can PBMT treat pain and soreness, it also has the capabilities to induce regenerative-like processes.

Within living cells are the mighty mitochondria, which most of us know as ‘The Powerhouse of the Cell’. Mitochondria are the power plant of living cells. They take in Oxygen and via the Krebs Cycle (Cellular Respiration), converts it into Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP is utilized by cells like fuel in a car. Without ATP a cell can no longer carry out its normal functions properly and this can result in Apoptosis, also known as cellular death.

PBMT can increase the cell’s ATP by providing the mitochondria with properly energized photons, thus increasing fuel production for the cell.

The application of PBMT improves the body’s responses to pain, inflammation, and injury. Patients will experience pain relief and improved healing.

Laser therapy is a new and evolving modality used in both veterinary and human medicine. The positive effects of lasers have been studied at length for many years. New studies and applications are being published every year.

This is an exciting treatment to be able to utilize and provide to my patients. I am so pleased with the results I have been achieving so far and can not wait to see what else will evolve from this modality.
